Air Conditioning Service Tips That Can Save You Money

Air Conditioning Service Tips That Can Save You Money

When it comes to saving money on your air conditioning, service experts have lot of tips for homeowners.  Follow these service tips and you’ll not only stay cool all summer you’ll also avoid costly air conditioning repair NYC residents.

First things first:  Always practice good air conditioning maintenance.  No matter how much you use your system (or how little) it’s important to ensure that everything is clean and in good working order.  A clean system will run more efficiently and it will cost you less because it will use less energy.

Next, you’ll want to ensure you are purchasing a high-efficiency unit.  Older, less energy-conscious units use much more energy which translates into much higher electricity bills.  Look for a unit with a high Energy Star rating, which is a good indication that you will be getting a unit that will save you as much money as possible right out of the gate.  If you have an older system and find that you are spending a lot to keep the house cool, consider upgrading to a newer, more energy-conscious unit.

You’ll also want to consider not cranking your air conditioner to the coldest possible setting.  The goal should be to cool the house, not to turn it into a walk-in freezer.  Generally, you should keep your thermostat at about 77 degrees. That will be enough to keep you much cooler (sometimes upwards of 30 degrees cooler!) than the outdoors, which is plenty cool enough to keep you comfortable.  If your home is cool enough that you have to wear a sweater in order to be comfortable, it’s too cool.  Turning the thermostat cooler by even just a couple of degrees can make your unit work much harder, costing you much more money every month.

You can also use fans to help boost the effect of the air conditioning.  Fans, although they do use electricity, use much less energy than a central air conditioning system, so they can help cool the house without costing much money.  By utilizing strategically placed fans in conjunction with your air conditioning system, you can stay cool without turning up your air conditioner as much.

One of the simplest things you can do to save money on your air conditioning is to keep the curtains drawn during the hottest part of the day.  This simple act will go a long way toward keeping the heat of the sun from heating your home.  That will help alleviate some of the work the air conditioning unit would otherwise have to do.

Do your part to ensure that your air conditioner doesn’t have to work unnecessarily hard.  Save those chores that heat up the house (laundry, baking, extensive use of the oven) for the evening hours when the house will naturally be cooler.  That way, your central air won’t have to work against that extra heat to keep your house at a comfortable temperature.

Lastly, do not cool an empty house.  If you are going to be away from home, turn your air conditioning way down.  Also, it’s a good idea to set your thermostat to be warmer during the day when you are at work and cooler at night when you are trying to sleep rather than one consistent temperature.

Saving money on your air conditioning bill isn’t difficult.  It’s a matter of small changes that make a big difference.
